Penida Colada owner, Wayan Surianta, grew up here, spending his childhood swimming, fishing, and helping his mother farm seaweed along this coastline. For decades, seaweed farming was the backbone of life in Ped Village - a sustainable practice that supported hundreds of local families across Nusa Penida’s north coast.
But as tourism expanded, the landscape began to transform. Dive boats replaced seaweed rafts, and the seaweed farmers’ huts made way for modern beachfront cafés. By 2017, seaweed farming had vanished entirely from Ped Village - leaving a fragile reef behind.

Today, the same community that once tended seaweed now nurtures living coral. In collaboration with Ocean Gardener, the kelompok petani laut (seaweed farmers’ collective) has evolved into Nusa Penida Ecotourism - a passionate group restoring the coral reef right in front of Penida Colada.
